International code of medical ethics

DUTIES OF PHYSICIANS IN GENERAL

A physician must always maintain the highest level of professional conduct.

A physician must not allow motives of gain to influence the free and independent exercise of professional judgment on behalf of patients.

A physician must, in all types of medical practice, be dedicated to providing competent medical service, with full technical and moral independence, with compassion and respect for human dignity.

A physician must deal honestly with patients and colleagues, and strive to expose those physicians who are weak in character or deficient in professional competence, or who engage in fraud or deception.

Practices considered unethical conduct:

a) Advertising by a physician, unless authorized by the laws of the country and the Code of Medical Ethics of the national medical association.

b) The payment or receipt of any fee or other emolument for the sole purpose of obtaining a patient, or prescribing, or referring a patient to an establishment.

A physician must respect the rights of patients, colleagues, and other health professionals, and must safeguard patient confidentiality.

A physician must act only in the patient’s interest when providing medical care that might have the effect of weakening the patient’s mental and physical condition.

A physician must exercise extreme caution when disclosing discoveries or new techniques or treatments through non-professional channels.

A physician must certify only what they have personally verified.

DUTIES OF PHYSICIANS TOWARD PATIENTS

A physician must always remember the obligation to preserve human life.

A physician owes patients all the resources of their knowledge and full loyalty. When an examination or treatment exceeds their capability, the physician must call upon another physician qualified in the matter.

A physician must keep in absolute secrecy everything that has been entrusted to them, even after the patient’s death.

A physician must provide emergency care as a humanitarian duty, unless certain that other physicians can and will provide such care.

DUTIES OF PHYSICIANS TOWARD EACH OTHER

A physician must behave toward colleagues as they would wish colleagues to behave toward them.

A physician must not entice patients away from colleagues.

A physician must observe the principles of the «Declaration of Geneva,» approved by the World Medical Association.
